Yesterday, Vanity Fair published an in-depth article on the making of Zack Snyder’s Justice League suggesting that the end of the reshot of the four-hour project will contain “a hero cameo that will blow the mind of fans.” Naturally, fans immediately got into speculation about what that cameo might be, with Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan, aka Green Lantern from the 2011 WB live-action film, gaining traction as a possible contender. Reynolds went to Twitter and denied that he was on the project, but the fan community has been burned by denials before, so I imagine some stubborn people are still wondering if that answer was just a smokescreen to hide a surprise cameo from Reynolds before they show up. the credits.
Now the cameo has been revealed. If you want to come in fresh, come back now, there will be spoilers ahead.
When I first saw the Vanity Fair quote hanging around, a small part of me wondered if the cameo could be J’onn J’onzz, the shapeshifter alien known as The Martian Manhunter, played by the actor. Harry lennix. The reason my mind immediately wandered was because for the past week Lennix has openly talked about being contacted by Snyder and asked to come back for new takes (more on that in a minute).
According to a report from io9, it turns out that, yes, the Martian Manhunter is the new Zack Snyder. League of Justice cameo promoted by Vanity Fair.
This boils down to a classic case of semantics: the writing of the VF article seemed to imply that the cameo was a secret but he never said it explicitly. Also, I would bet that “hardcore fans” are the type of people who constantly search the internet for details about the Snyder Cut and thus would already be aware of Lennix’s role in this movie. Oh good. Apologies to the fans who were hoping for something else to shake the world.
In October 2019, Snyder revealed on social media that in his ideal cut, a scene between Martha Kent (Diane Lane) and Lois Lane (Amy Adams) would have ended with Martha walking away and shapeshifting into Martian Manhunter before finally becoming a the form of Harry Lennix’s General Swanwick, a character who appeared in Snyder’s 2013 film Iron Man. And just five days ago, Lennix was interviewed by Variety and talked about appearing in this new cut of League of Justice. “The next call I got from Zack was, ‘Hey, when can you come in and shoot?'” Lennix said. “That was great. I found out that it was a possibility, or at least that Martian Manhunter was going to be in it, when he revealed via storyboard that Martha Kent is coming to visit Lois, and then after she leaves she is revealed to be, in De fact, Calvin Swanwick, or the Martian manhunter. This is how I knew. “
I was wondering if this was a version of the scene that appeared in the theatrical cut where Martha stops by the Daily Planet to visit Lois, but since this Martian Manhunter reveal is supposedly part of the film’s ending, it’s probably completely different creation.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League debuts in March 18th, 2021 on HBO Max.
