The popular comedian simply attacked people who believe in a Flat Earth with a tweet that suggests that he thinks more about the religious.
Ricky Gervais is not one of those who support him. back, as anyone who has ever witnessed it can attest. He is a wild celebrity in the Golden Globes and targeted the religious, but in his last tweet missive, he pointed to the sudden and strange popularity of Flat Earth theories.
As the name implies, Flat Earthers rejects all the photos and videos and stories of witnesses and science that prove to us that the Earth is a sphere that orbits the sun. They claim that, in reality, the Earth is a flat disk and the sun and stars rotate on us not far away.
Gervais did not shred words in his tweet, suggesting he does not believe Flat Earthers, even taken themselves seriously. "I think some people really believe that a god made the universe, and I think some people really believe that there is a future life, but I do not think some people really believe that the Earth is flat, it seems to be looking for attention, Hipster Ignorance."
So even though Gervais thinks about the religious, he is even more disdainful of those who think that the Earth is flat. Maybe the phrase "hipster ignorance" will become fashionable?
This is how Flat Earth Society describes itself and its beliefs on its website.
Welcome to Flat Earth Wiki, also known as FEW – a collaborative resource maintained by The Flat Earth Society!
This website is dedicated to unraveling the true mysteries of the universe and showing that the Earth is flat and that the doctrine of the Round Earth is little more than elaborate deception.
Much of the experimental evidence of a Dr. Samuel Birley Rowbotham, a nineteenth-century professor who traveled the islands of Britain lecturing at many leading universities of the time, provides the Earth Firm. Its experimental evidence is very easily reproducible and only requires access to a long body of stagnant water and a little trigonometry to conclude that the water is not convex, that the surface of the earth does not curve as mathematically predicted by the round doctrine. Other experiments require only a stick and a plumb line. Each of the experiments is described in its entirety in the flat earth literature.
Over the years it has become a duty of every member of the Flat Earth Society to meet with the common enemy in open, confessed and inflexible rebellion; declare that his reign of error and confusion is over; and that henceforth, like a decaying dynasty, it must shrink and disappear, leaving the throne and the realm of science and philosophy to those awakened intellects whose number is constantly increasing, and whose march is rapid and irresistible. The soldiers of truth and reason of the Flat Earth Society have unsheathed the sword, and before another generation has been educated and grown to maturity, they will have forced the usurpers to abdicate.
Like the decayed and crumbling trees of an ancient forest, rented and shattered by wind and storm, the hypothetical philosophies, which until now have disturbed the civilized world, are incapable of resisting the elements of experimental and logical criticism; and sooner or later they must succumb to their attacks. The ax is raised for a final blow: it is about to fall on the primitive sphere of the earth, and the blow will surely "cut the walker down".
This site is not a joke. We are actively promoting the Flat Earth Movement throughout the world. There are, undoubtedly, several flat earth posters that are not serious, but they are quite easy to identify.
The evidence of a flat earth derives from many different facets of science and philosophy. The simplest thing is to trust one's own senses to discern the true nature of the world around us. The world looks flat, the bottom of the clouds is flat, the movement of the sun; All these are examples of your senses that tell you that we do not live in a heliocentric spherical world. This is using what is called an empirical approach, or an approach that is based on the information of your senses. Alternatively, by using Descartes' method of Cartesian doubt to skeptically view the world around us, one quickly finds that the notion of a spherical world is the theory that has the burden of proof and not the theory of the flat earth.
Perhaps the best example of a flat ground test is the Bedford level experiment. In summary, this was an experiment performed many times in a stretch of water of six miles that proved that the surface of the water was flat. It did not conform to the curvature of the earth that the defenders of the round Earth teach.
Many other experiments that demonstrate the lack of curvature in the earth can be found in Samuel Rowbotham's Earth Not a Globe.
