TO robot built Lego can solve a Rubik’s cube in about 3.2 seconds, but about 40 years after I first learned the iconic puzzle, I have yet to solve it on my own. I figured that successfully cracking a cube would stay on my bucket list forever, but a clever Rubik’s cube is finally teaching me the strategies for solving one.

If you’ve ever seen a Speedcubing competition where puzzle masters compete to solve a Rubik’s cube in record time, You may have wondered how these geniuses can look at a scrambled cube and know the exact steps required to match all the colored tiles on all six sides. Competitors may appear to be spinning their cubes at random in a furious attempt at luck. and randomly match one side, but there is actually a goodEstablished the strategy you are following to solve the puzzle.

You can read the resolution strategy step by step in the rubik’s cube official website, which involves working with a series of smaller goals, like first making a daisy with a yellow center, then a white cross, and then solving all the corners, etc. It is a very specific process that, when followed correctly, guarantees an uncoded cube, but learning how to do it correctly is a challenge in itself. Is one that I find much easier with the connected Rubik’s cube.

Rubik’s Connected Cube looks and feels just like the original (here it’s alongside a simpler 2×2 version of the puzzle) but features curved corners for easy Speedcubing.

Rubik’s Connected Cube is the official Rubik brand version of the GoCube, an improved clever version of the puzzle that started its life through a successful Kickstarter campaign. Aside from the rounded corners that make Speedcubing easy, Rubik’s Connected Cube looks and feels exactly like the original puzzle does, right down to the multi-colored stickers that cover all of its individual tiles. But unlike the original which can be easily solved (relatively speaking) by peeling off and reapplying all those stickers, the connected Rubik’s cube connects to a mobile app via Bluetooth that knows every move made with the cube in real time. and its exact coding. status, even if you continue to play with the cube after closing the application.

I have a few minor complaints with the connected Rubik’s cube. Uses a proprietary charging cable that you’ll never want to lose, and for $ 60 I’d rather more durable plastic tiles as some versions of the puzzle now use instead of multi-colored stickers that can come off over time. It has a premium price tag without a premium finish. BBut I’m happy to overlook those concerns because in just one week, I’m almost at the point where I can solve a Rubik’s cube on my own.

If you dream of becoming a competitive Speedcuber one day, The Rubik’s Connected app includes features like timers, which it only starts when the cube starts moving and stops as soon as it is resolved, skills challenges and even the ability to qualify for official competitions. But for beginners like me, it’s the interactive training tools that justify the updates to this popular puzzle.

Rubik’s Connected mobile app tracks every move you make in real time, so as you learn how to solve it, you’ll immediately know when you’ve made a mistake and can quickly get back on track.

Through a series of interactive lessons, learn the process and strategies for solving a cube (pro tip: never return the intermediate sections) presented through text instructions, 3D animations and videos where handling techniques are demonstrated. Solving a Rubik’s Cube even has its own abbreviated language for the side you’re supposed to turn next. For example, F means to rotate the front face clockwise, F ‘means to rotate it counter-clockwise, and F2 or F’2 means to rotate it twice.

Learning and mastering the specific steps required to quickly solve the puzzle is made a breeze with the use of text instructions, 3D animations, and even in-app videos showing ideal handling techniques.

You can work through the resolution steps using the guide on Rubik’s websiteBut the connected Rubik’s cube and app keep track of your progress along the way, warn you when you’ve accidentally made a mistake, and even provide immediate instructions on how to undo any mistakes you’ve made. It’s like having a Rubik’s Cube master looking over your shoulder all the time to make sure you’re getting it right. And, for me at least, it means that a bug doesn’t leave me confused and frustrated with the process.

It takes about an hour to complete all the training in the app, and you will probably have to repeat it a few more times to memorize the process. After a week of diligent practiceI haven’t gotten to that point yet, but I can also see muscle-specific memories set in, and Speedcubing doesn’t seem like such a superhuman feat anymore. I don’t think I will ever break world records, but I have no doubt that I will be able to solve a Rubik’s Cube on my own if I keep practicing. In g.

If you are completely frustrated with the lessons and are ready to give up, the app has another incredibly useful feature – an automatic cube solver that presents youto-follow the steps so that the Connected Rubik’s Cube is decoded and looks like fresh out of the box again.

There is no sugar coating: PAsking $ 60 for a smart version of a toy that you can get for $ 10 without app connectivity is a bit ridiculous. I’m sure there are many aspirational Speedcubers who will do well. reading a free tutorial online. I am not one of them, and will probably never go back to a normal Rubik’s cube.
