Xiaomi is preparing to announce the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus smartphones in China on Thursday, and the product management director, Donovan Sung, has just shown them in a set of tweeted photos. There are still no details about prices or specifications, but we can see that both phones have thin bezels and approximately 18: 9 screens, in line with many high-end devices launched this year.
The difference is that you can expect Redmi 5 phones to be fairly cheap. Although it is not the main line of the company, the Redmi series is very important for Xiaomi, particularly in India. Redmi 4 and Redmi Note 4 were the two most popular phones in the country, according to recent figures from IDC, and have helped Xiaomi catch up with Samsung to claim the title of India's number one smartphone brand.
The price of Redmi 4 starts at 6,999 rupees in India, or about $ 108. That gives you a phone with a metal construction, a fingerprint sensor, a 720p 5-inch screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor 435, a 13 megapixel camera and a 4,100 mAh battery.
If Xiaomi can maintain its successful retail strategy and reduce Redmi prices, these new phones could be a great success. Stay tuned for coverage when they are fully disclosed on December 7.
