Sales for Lego’s new “Women of NASA” play set have already taken off.
In its first day of launch, the $25 set turned Amazon’s top-selling toy, CNN reported. By the tip of the day Wednesday the units had bought out on the platform completely, sparking the supportive social media hashtag “#WomenofNASA.”
Astronomer Nancy Grace Roman, laptop scientist Margaret Hamilton and astronauts Sally Ride and Mae Jemison are every featured within the 231-piece Lego set. Each of the ladies, who all performed pivotal roles within the U.S. Space program, come full with setups that additional illustrate their careers.
Ride was the primary American girl in area whereas Jemison was the African-American girl in area. Hamilton helmed software program improvement for the Apollo Space Program and Roman served a key function in kicking off the Hubble Space telescope program — a duplicate of which comes with the Lego set.
Maia Weinstock, deputy editor of MIT News, first pitched the “Women of NASA” set to Lego Ideas in 2016. She’s been designing customized scientist and engineer collectible figurines for seven years in a bid to deliver visibility to STEM professions.
The firm, which beforehand confronted criticism after its lack of feminine characters was blasted by a 7-year-old in 2014, picked up Weinstock’s thought and Hamilton even received to current its last design.
“Any product that lets girls see themselves in careers like this is important for children of all genders,” Weinstock informed CNN. “It provides girls an added boost in thinking that they can pursue a career such as mathematics or engineering, especially because traditionally girls have not been encouraged to be a part of these and other technical fields.”
While “Women of NASA” is bought out on Amazon it’s nonetheless out there on the Lego retailer as of Friday morning.
