Wisconsin Badgers accidentally shake off the trophy while celebrating Duke’s Mayo Bowl victory

Charlotte, NC – The Wisconsin Badgers captured Duke’s Mayo Bowl and the accompanying trophy.

And then they broke it.

While dancing to celebrate his team’s 42-28 victory at Wake Forest on Wednesday, quarterback Graham Mertz dropped a football-sized piece to Lenox Crystal, shattering on the locker room floor after his base collapsed .

“We just wanted everyone to have a piece of that trophy,” Wisconsin coach Paul Kristen joked.

Mertz accounted for three touchdowns and Wisconsin converted four different interceptions, all in 21 points by different players in a close game pass to the Demon Deacons. Five players scored touchdowns for the Badgers.

Mertz, a redshirt freshman, threw for 130 yards and ran for two short TDs as Wisconsin (4-3) ended the rocky 2020 season on a high note.

“Yes, I dropped it,” ‘Mertz said sheepishly.’ ‘It’s up to me. It happened.”

The Badgers may be ready to forgive him.
