News flash: The Bulls aren’t going to score 46 points in a quarter very often.
In fact, given that the production marked the fourth highest scoring of the season and tied for the fifth highest in franchise history, the third quarter on Monday, which came during a methodical 120-100 beating of the Rockets , it’s one for the books.
It’s also one for the movie theater, and emblematic of the way this growing Bulls team is playing. Selfless mentality. Strong and determined cut. Passing intoxicating. Sizzling shots.
“One of the best quarters I have been a part of in my career.Thad Young said.
Note that this is Young’s fourteenth season.
The Bulls shot 19 of 25 in the period, including 7 of 9 from beyond the arc. They posted 10 assists. All seven players who recorded minutes scored and all but Wendell Carter Jr. posted at least one assist.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Bulls’ scoring depth and balance: Coby White, who led the Bulls with 24 points and also had 10 rebounds, scored just two points in the period and played less than Tomáš Satoranský. That’s because White went out to the locker room to have his bloody nose tackled (he also hit his head on the basket post but later said he was fine) and coach Billy Donovan rolled on the hot unit.
“His crazy. I think Zach (LaVine) had, like, (seven) points in the middle and I came back for two or three minutes and when I came back, I see Zach is 20, ”White said, laughing. “So I asked Wendell, ‘What happened?’ He said, ‘Bruh, he did a 14-0 run.’ And I was like, ‘Dang’.
“I’ve been saying this since the beginning of the year: everyone has a common goal and that is to win. That’s all that really matters to us as a team. We don’t really care who gets off. We know, like, Zach is going to go out and get 30. That’s what it is. But other than that, we don’t really care, man, as long as we win the games. It’s fun to play with everyone. “
LaVine didn’t actually have a 14-0 streak. But he did score 11 points in 1 minute, 29 seconds and 14 in the period on 5 of 5 shots, including three 3-pointers.
LaVine obviously has this ability to score in clusters. But his approach to the night – a defense reading start that featured him grooming his teammates, followed by a scoring blast – is further proof of his growth and the potential of this offense.
For example, coach Billy Donovan constantly talks about cutting to create better shots for his teammates. When a rare possession got bogged down, LaVine cut hard from the spot and Young, who has been a revelation this season, hit him with a no-look rebound pass for a layup.
“You have a team that is willing to play for each other,” Young said. “It’s like the same thing when I was in Indy. We play for each other. We always tried to have more than 30 assists per game and everyone was playing for each other. This gives me the same vibe and the same feeling. The boys are locked up and we all play for each other.
“We understand who our main guys are, but we also understand that there are four other guys that are around the ball player. So we all try to move and cut and read each other and try to make the game as easy as possible. And I think that’s what it has been. The coaches have insisted that we continue to shoot wide open shots and play really good basketball, and we’ve been doing it. “
The Bulls have also benefited from better ball safety this month. They committed only 12 turnovers against Houston. And like any good coach, Donovan emphasized that even that low number could have been lower.
Donovan also joked that he didn’t want to talk too much about the Bulls’ improved ball safety, a big problem earlier this season, not to curse him. But that’s the thing: If those numbers stay low, an already well-oiled offense runs even smoother.
So no, the 46-point quarters are not going to happen all the time. But the Bulls, who finished with 24 assists, narrowly missed their 20th I play with at least 25. They posted six scorers in double figures, which they have done consistently.
There is much that I like.
“We are moving forward with our group,” said Donovan. “I think we are trying to play the right way. This is a very disinterested team and an extra passing team and a group that is willing to pass the ball ”.
