World class pilot for astronaut

Young studied aeronautical engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, before joining the US Navy. UU in 1952. Marking the pace of his future career, he set world records for his aviation skills.

He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1962 after climbing nearly two miles in less than 35 seconds in a Navy F4B Phantom II. jet. He also set the world record for a 15.5-mile climb in just 228 seconds.

Shortly after this feat, Young was selected by NASA to train as an astronaut, co-piloting the Gemini III spacecraft in 1965. Moving the Gemini III down, forward and sideways while in orbit around of the Earth, Young scored another first-level maneuver with co-pilot Gus Grissom.
