White House invites Democrats to sign ceremony with UAE, Israel, Bahrain

The White House has invited senior Democratic lawmakers to a ceremony where representatives of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain will sign an agreement with Israel on Tuesday to normalize relations.

A senior administration official told reporters on Monday that a large number of Democrats were invited to the signing ceremony to be held on Tuesday at the White House South Lawn. The official said at least some Democrats were expected to attend the ceremony, but did not name any.

The broker helped a landmark agreement between the UAE and Israel to normalize relations in August. Last week, Trump announced that Bahrain also reached an agreement to normalize relations with Israel.

The two sides will sign an agreement dubbed the “Abraham Accord” at the White House ceremony on Tuesday, a notable diplomatic achievement for Trump. The agreement between the UAE and Israel received bipartisan praise when it was announced by the White House last month.

The presence of Democrats at the ceremony will be a rare scene. The White House has previously refused to invite Democrats when the president signed major legislation, such as the president’s signing of $ 2 trillion into a coronovirus relief fund. Partial tensions remain in Washington and Republicans for future coronovirus relief and upcoming elections.

The senior administration official said on Monday that a few hundred individuals were expected to attend the outdoor ceremony on Tuesday, and recommended masks amid coronovirus epidemics, but were not required. Members of the foreign delegation will be tested for COVID-19 before the ceremony.

The senior administration official said that all three parties would sign a document, the “Abraham Agreement”, and that both parties would sign bilateral agreements. The officer did not go into sufficient details about the contents of the documents.

The deal between the UAE and Israel represents a significant breakthrough in diplomatic relations between the two nations as the Trump administration works to facilitate cooperation between Arab countries and Israel. In a surprise announcement from the Oval Office on Friday, Trump announced that Bahrain and Israel would also normalize relations.
