According to a website and application monitoring service downdetector.com, it started at around 9:30 p.m.
By 1pm on Saturday, it appeared that the issue had been resolved.
“We are looking into reports in which some people are about to login again to access their Facebook account,” the company said in a statement. “We believe this was due to a configuration change and we are working to get things back to normal as soon as possible.”
The mass logout was quickly followed up with memes from users as well as some conspiracy theories.
In a stroke of irony (or genius, depending on your perspective), Facebook posted a follow-up note on Twitter about the outage.
So Facebook heard that it was a “configuration change”.
