Wayne County Targets COVID-19 Vaccines for Seniors in 8 Communities

(WXYZ) – This week Moderna and Pfizer will catch up, distributing a backlog of around 6 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine delayed by last week’s snowstorms.

When delayed shipments arrive from Michigan, Wayne County will focus on getting them into the arms of people 65 and older by making them more accessible.

The winter storm slowed things down for Wayne County, but as the doses roll in, they are committed to getting them to seniors, targeting eight different communities they are in.

Those communities are: Canton, Plymouth, Highland Park, Hamtramck, Inkster, Melvindale, Romulus, and Wayne. * Disclaimer: You must be a resident of the city you are calling to get an appointment *

Beginning Monday, Wayne County residents 65 and older can call one of eight senior or community centers. The county health department is scheduled to administer another 13,000 doses next week, which will be one of its largest shipments to date, though still not as large as the shipments Detroit has been receiving.

Last week, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced increased vaccine eligibility for all Detroiters 60 and older with chronic medical conditions, offering $ 2 trips to the TCF Center for those in need.

It’s a terrifying reality: Wayne County hopes to bring peace of mind and easier access to people 65 and older who bring vaccines to neighborhoods. There are no walk-ins, and seniors must make an appointment by calling site in their communities.

More senior vaccination sites will be announced as more vaccines become available. In total, Wayne County public health and local health systems have provided more than 181,596 doses to Wayne County residents since the vaccine became available in December.
