Watch NASA astronauts make pizza for movie night in space

Fortunately, life without pizza is not something we have to consider on Earth, but for astronauts on board the International Space Station, a giant portion is not a regular menu item. When Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli, of the European Space Agency, told his boss about his pizza craving at a live event, he stimulated a special delivery to the ISS. The astronauts then enjoyed a rare night of pizza, although their cakes were not in the form of sticky, slimy and cheesy food that we are used to seeing.

– Paolo Nespoli (@astro_paolo) December 2, 2017 [19659007] As published in a video on YouTube, astronauts created their own pizzas using Boboli bark, salsa, pepperoni and other toppings. The cheese, remarkably, is not on the menu. As previously reported, the International Space Station team can choose their meals from more than 200 standard menu items.

Pizza is not on the list, but astronauts can eat dishes such as chicken fajitas, salmon, spaghetti, and bread pudding. On Thanksgiving, the team even put together their own festive meal with smoked turkey, mashed potatoes, corn dressing and cherry cobbler (the more traditional pumpkin pie is not a standard item on the menu)

The scientist explained Food from NASA Vickie Kloeris to Newsweek that the menu has been consistent since Expedition 16 (currently, they are at 53). The creation of new menu items is expensive, and time consuming, since the recipes are adjusted several times before reaching the final winning combination.

"What works when you prepare a recipe for eight does not necessarily work when you're climbing to 200," he said. "Then, when you take it and lyophilize it and thermostabilize it, change the product."

And sometimes, despite your best efforts, some foods will never be space-friendly, like cheesecake.

"We might not get the color that one would badociate with cheesecake, and the texture that most people would consider acceptable for a cheesecake," Kloeris said.

Occasionally, a commercial cargo vehicle with empty freezer space will be sent, which is good news for the astronauts "If they do, and can save the dough, they will allow us to send ice cream candy to the members of the crew, "Kloeris explained.

Although the menu is quite extensive, everyone will lose some of their favorite foods, such as pizza. For those cases where lasagna and meat sauce (which is one of the few Italian dishes on the menu) will simply not cure a craving, the team can carry commercial items aboard the space station, hence the Boboli pizza crust.

A The New York portion is not, but Nespoli considered it unexpectedly delicious.
