The multifunctional rear door of RAM Trucks adds a new dimension to the long American truck war. But is not a tailgate just a tailgate? No longer.
The competition for the largest, most powerful and most luxurious American truck. It has been raging for decades. But a new feature has recently taken center stage: the almighty tailgate.
Last week, RAM Trucks entered the competition at the Chicago Auto Show with its new multifunctional tailgate. The brand showed it in its latest RAM Rebel 2019, a new truck that is already receiving many accolades. Check out how it works in the video below.
Multifunction tailgate RAM: What does it do?
The new multifunction RAM tailgate functions as a traditional tailgate, but also has a 60-40 split folding function. It also retains the remote launch and fully moistened functions of the standard RAM 1500 tailgate.
The new tailgate offers four configurations. You get the standard open and flat standard configuration for any rear door. What's new is that you have the options of having only the left door open, just the right door or both doors open at the same time.

RAM backdoor functionality
The key benefit of this design is that you can get much closer to the gear of the truck platform without having to reach the tailgate. This is especially useful when loading and unloading heavy or bulky items.
RAM also developed a new retractable retractable step to complement the new tailgate design. The step is mounted under the rear bumper and allows easy entry and exit from the truck platform when both tailgate doors are open.

The trucks are destined to do the work. And one additional benefit of this new flip-up tailgate design is that it makes loading forklifts on the truck much easier.
By numbers: RAM Multifunction tailgate
The multifunction tailgate has a load capacity of 2,000 pounds. That's impressive for its many parts, and especially considering the truck's total load capacity of 2,300 pounds.

You can get any 2019 RAM 1500 truck with the new tailgate in the second quarter of 2019. The upgrade of the tailgate will cost you an additional $ 995. If you also want the optional retractable center step, it will cost you another $ 295.
The tailgate war
The only other truck in the US market with a factory-hinged tailgate design is the Honda Ridgeline. That design folds as usual and also moves outward like a piece to the side.
Perhaps surprisingly, Ford is the brand that actually fired the first shot in this tailgate war. It integrated a removable bed step in the tailgate. However, by today's standards, this design seems simple, although it remains a useful feature.
Then, GMC really climbed things with the MultiPro Tailgate, which debuted in the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500. While it has six very useful positions, it has no detour function.
While the response of RAM Trucks to the growing technological trend of the tailgate will undoubtedly influence the decisions of some buyers, it also raises some questions.

What will be the next tailgate of the future? How much more complicated can the floodgates reach before the durability is compromised? The most important thing is that the added functionality of these new tailgate designs is worth the added cost.
