Video of Black man’s arrest makes London police headlines

LONDON (AP) – A London police officer was suspended and another was shown a video of an arrest on Friday following restricted duties, in which an officer appeared to be kneeling on the neck of a black man.

The footage of the arrest in North London on Thursday showed two officers handcuffed. At the beginning of the 2-minute and 20-second clip, an officer is seen pressurizing the man’s neck with his knee. The officer’s hand is on the head of the person who is on the sidewalk.

“Get away from me … get off my throat”, the struggling man can be heard shouting in the video that appears on social media. “I have done nothing wrong, cut my neck.”

One of the two officers asks, “Are you going to behave yourself?” He is told to stay down.

The incident was referred to the Independent Office for Police, which oversees complaints related to police forces in England and Wales.

Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner of Police Steve House said, “The video footage I have seen today and broadcast on social media is extremely disturbing. “I understand that watching multiple footage will increase my anxiety.”

The police department said in a statement that the two officers were responding to reports of a fight. The statement said the man was arrested on suspicion of possession and possession of an offensive weapon, and has been seen by a police doctor.

“Some techniques worried me a lot,” House said. “They are not taught in police training.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan questioned what happened to senior officials.

“I welcome the fact that the incident has been reviewed by the Met expeditiously and it is fitting that they have referred it to the IOPC,” Khan said. “I look forward to a swift and fully independent investigation with all decisions made public.

Police are under investigation in several cities following the death of George Floyd following his arrest in Minnesota on May 25. A police officer charged Floyd’s neck with second-degree murder against Derek Chauvin for about eight minutes.
