Update for Wednesday March 3
Oklahoma reported 747 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday. The state’s cumulative number of cases is 425,747, according to the Oklahoma State Department of Health.
The Health Department reported Wednesday that it will change the way it reports COVID-related deaths. OSDH will use a Provisional Death Count so that reported deaths in the state reflect those of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and show a “more timely picture” of the impact of the disease in Oklahoma.
Before Wednesday there was a difference of nearly 2,500 between the death toll reported by OSDH and the number reported by the CDC. Wednesday’s provisional death count was 7,035.
The provisional death count provided by the CDC is based on death certificates. From OSDH: “As cases increased towards the end of 2020, our investigative epidemiologists began to find a greater number of incomplete records that required in-depth investigation. This process has subsequently led to a growing difference between the death count. of the OSDH “.
“We believe that now is an appropriate time for us to make this transition in our reporting system so that it is not perceived that we are minimizing these deaths,” said state epidemiologist Dr. Jared Taylor. “We recognize that each of these deaths is a tragedy and represents a great cost to that person’s family and friends, to the state of Oklahoma, and to the world.”
