New Delhi: India Kumbh Mela has been recognized by UNESCO as "intangible cultural heritage of humanity" and was held as the world's largest peaceful gathering of pilgrims.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday recognition was granted by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, an entity that works under UNESCO.
The decision to recognize the Kumbh Mela was taken at its current meeting in Jeju, South Korea.
The inscription of the Kumbh Mela was recommended by the body of experts that examines the nominations presented by the member states. The committee noted that it was the largest peaceful congregation of pilgrims on earth.
"The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage under UNESCO inscribed the 'Kumbh Mela' on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity during its 12th session was held in Jeju, Korea. South, "said the MEA.

In 2003, the General Conference of UNESCO adopted the Convention for the Safeguarding the Intangible Heritage as an international treaty, recognizing that cultural heritage was more than tangible places, monuments and objects and that it also included living traditions and expressions.
The Kumbh Mela joins new elements of Botswana, Colombia, Venezuela, Mongolia, Morocco, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates in the list of UNESCO.
