Type 2 diabetes: Bread can increase blood sugar levels


Are you the type of person who wakes up and immediately thinks of breakfast? Or are you the type that gets on with their day, and waits until their stomachs grow? Either way, choosing what to eat (and what not to eat) can be a mine field for diabetics.

If you are thinking about what to eat for breakfast this morning (or for tomorrow, if you have already eaten), then you want something that is not going to lower your blood sugar level .

High blood sugar levels – otherwise known as hyperglycemia – read more than 7 mmol / L while fasting.

If you have had two hours of a bite to eat something, the World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed blood glucose levels higher than 11 mmol / L.

One immediate cause of hyperglycaemia, as reported by the charity Diabetes UK, is “eating more carbohydrates than your body”.

Signs of high blood sugar levels, which may not appear until you reach more than 11 mmol / L, are: frequent urination; Fatigue; Increased thirst; Increase in appetite; And blurred vision.

A sudden blood sugar spike can be dangerous, as it can cause ketoacidosis.

Ketoacidosis affects type 2 diabetic patients who are insulin dependent – being a threat when blood sugar levels reach 15 mmol / L.

Some people may like to munch on toast in the morning, or add a few slices to their big breakfast.

Taking simplicity of things, diabetics are advised by donation to consider how much fat and calories are in the bread you take.

Bread is a source of carbohydrates, which are broken down into glucose during digestion.

Diabetes UK confirmed: “All carbohydrates affect blood sugar levels.”

Not what

Even more difficult, not only are diabetics recommended considering the fat and calorie content of their bread, “carbohydrate requirements vary between individuals”.

Factors to consider include “age, sex, weight and physical activity”.

The average reference intake (RI) of carbohydrates is 230 grams for women and 300 grams for men.

To simplify things, the easiest option is to eliminate bread from your diet.

But if a crusty loaf is actually included for your pleasure, here’s what you need to know:

One of the best breads to chew on for low-carb, low-calorie and low-fat ingredients is rye bread (55Kcal – 11.5g carbs – 0.4g fat).

Why is blood spikes annoying?

If blood sugar levels remain high for extended periods, it can lead to long-term complications of the condition.

For example, people may develop diabetic nephropathy (ie kidney disease).

Indications for kidney disease include swelling of the ankles, feet, lower legs, or hands due to water retention.

Diabetic patients are advised to be screened for kidney complications once a year.
