A man in a domestic dispute with his wife was fatally shot by a tactical team of the Maryland State Police after he shot and wounded two members of the unit when they entered his home in Allegany County during a barricaded on Friday morning.
The man, whom the police did not identify, was pronounced dead after being transferred to Washington County Medical Center for treatment, police said.
The two soldiers who were shot, each in their lower extremities, were aware and the state police responded for the first time to the couple's house in the 11300 block of High Germany Road in Little Orleans, an isolated city between Hagerstown and Cumberland, in the center of the city. Western Maryland, around 11 pm Thursday for a national call, police said.
The area is near the Green Ridge State Forest and crosses a bend in the Potomac River from West Virginia.
When the police arrived, the man's wife told them that she and her husband had "engaged in an argument" when the man allegedly brandished a gun and threatened her, saying: "This ends today," she said. police.
The woman told the police that she and her husband had problems and that the gun had fired when they fell to the ground. The woman fled the house and ran to a neighbor's house to call the police, she told them.
The police surrounded the house and tried to call the man on his phone several times, but he did not respond, police said. The member of the Tactical Assault Task Force of the state police, or the STATE team, responded and "used the loudspeaker in his armored vehicle" to talk to the man, police said.
The man "rejected the police's requests to surrender and repeatedly said he was not leaving," police said.
Sometime early Friday, members of the tactical team entered the house and an exchange of gunfire occurred, police said.
There was also a fire in the home, which the police believe that the suspect began around the time of his entry.
The homicide unit of the state police is investigating the incident.
The results of the investigation will be turned over to the Allegany County State's Attorney's Office for review, police said.
