Two people were killed when a plane flown by a student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University crashed near Daytona Beach early Wednesday, authorities confirmed.
The accident was reported by a witness around 10 a. The plane went down from Tomoka Farms Road, near the Daytona Flea & Farmers Market, authorities said.
Two airplane occupants – a pilot student at Embry-Riddle and a pilot examiner from the US Federal Aviation Administration. UU., None of which has been publicly identified – were killed.  "Our prayers and our deepest condolences go to all those affected by this devastating loss," University President P. Barry Butler said in a statement.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said it had notified the National Transportation Safety Board of the Federal Aviation Administration. Officials from those agencies were called to the scene of the crash to investigate their cause, the Sheriff's Office said.
"Embry-Riddle is cooperating fully with all appropriate law enforcement authorities," Butler said.
Butler said the college's chaplain and counseling center were available "to provide support, as needed, for students, faculty, and staff."
