Twitter has suspended its verified-profile scheme and described it as “broken”, following complaints over the kind of accounts being verified.

Typically, distinguished folks, together with musicians, journalists and firm executives, get a blue icon on their profile after proving their id.

However, some far-right and white-supremacist accounts have now additionally been verified.

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey mentioned the scheme would now be “reconsidered”.

In a press release, the corporate mentioned: “Verification was meant to authenticate id and voice, however it’s interpreted as an endorsement or an indicator of significance.
