Try, Try Again – DC Vaccination Website Works After Morning Glitch


The technical problems follow two consecutive days of problems, causing residents to have trouble registering online for coronavirus vaccination appointments.

The DC Department of Health made 3,500 appointments for COVID-19 vaccination available at 9 a.m. Saturday, but the website was blocked shortly after they were supposed to be available.

District residents, ages 18-64 with qualifying medical conditions, who live in the ZIP codes of 20422, 20011, 20017, 20018, 20002, 20001, 20019, 20020, 20032, and 20593 are eligible to make appointments , according to DC Board member Elissa Silverman.

“They told me these are appointments for the vaccination doses that will be on next week’s assignment,” Silverman said in an email.

But on Saturday morning, those who signed up for appointments were still having trouble.

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said around 9:30 am that it was a server issue and those who had trouble registering should try again.

A DC resident said it took him 30 minutes to access the vaccine site and that only four sites were available within 100 miles of his home. He said he was unable to register despite meeting all the eligibility requirements.

Several people trying to schedule appointments expressed their frustrations on social media on Saturday morning, with one person saying they hit “confirm appointment” at 9 a.m. and the website crashed before the confirmation screen loaded.

Residents were frustrated Thursday when the registration site collapsed and a similar situation developed on Friday.

“The online registration system was not fully updated for expansion to residents ages 18 to 64 with qualifying medical conditions. And the system was not checked by either our contractor, Microsoft, or the DC government to make sure it was working properly before it went live at 9am, “Silverman said of Thursday’s incident, which he called a” error “.

Beginning at 9 am Friday, all city residents 18 and older with “qualifying medical conditions” attempted to schedule appointments for the COVID-19 vaccine by going online at vaccinate.dc.gov or by calling 855-363 -0333. According to Silverman, 4,350 appointments were going to be available but were expected to sell out quickly, usually within the first half hour.

Unfortunately, problems with the website came up immediately. At 9 a.m., when residents were supposed to sign up for more than 4,300 available doses, many were again hampered by problems on the DC Health website.

DC Councilman Vincent Gray says he plans to hold the Bowser Administration accountable for the failed launch.
