Coronavirus cases in California reach 10,000 in one day as Trump endorses therapy drugs instead of vaccine
As entertaining as all this is, let’s not forget that the real problem right now remains the coronavirus.
California reported more than 10,000 new cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday, a record increase for a single day that also exceeded the number of recently trained contact trackers by the state to detect and prevent potential outbreaks.
California is one of several states that has reported an increasing number of new infections in the past week, raising specific questions about how Trump has handled the crisis and preventing state plans to lift the blockades.
The 10,201 new cases reported Tuesday brought the total number of cases in the state since the start of the pandemic to almost 284.00. In June, California infections doubled with more than 117,000 new cases.
The daily increase exceeds the 10,000 contact trackers that Governor Gavin Newsom announced in mid-May, when case numbers were declining, as part of plans to reopen the state.
Newsom then said that more than 500 people had already been trained to work as “disease detectives,” using state databases to track and advise people who had been in contact with confirmed cases.
However, instead of reopening the state economy further, Newsom last week withdrew those efforts, banned meals at indoor restaurants in much of the state, closed bars, and increased enforcement of social distancing. Indoor activities in restaurants, movie theaters, museums, and other facilities were banned in 19 counties where 70 percent of the population lives for at least three weeks.
Only three other states have reported more than 10,000 cases in one day. Florida reported 11,458 new cases on July 4 and Texas reported 10,028 on Tuesday.
New York registered 12,847 new infections on April 10, three weeks after the state implemented a strict shutdown that closed most companies. Once it was the epicenter of the American stage of the global epidemic, New York experienced an increase of about 6% in June, the lowest rate in the entire country.
As for Trump, he insisted yesterday during an event about the reopening of US schools that coronavirus therapy drugs are his priority, not developing a vaccine, as Dr. Anthony Fauci again warned against the “False complacency” with the President who continues to claim the leveling of US mortality qualifies as a victory.
