The specialty grocery merchant which confirmed on Friday that it is trying to keep its first store in Chattanooga.
“We are very interested in bringing a store to the area,” said Kenya Friend-Daniel, Public Relations Manager at Trader Joe’s.
The building plan filed with the City of Chatanoga shows that the store could go to 2111 Gunbarrel Road, a location formerly owned by the AAA Chatanoga Insurance Agency.

A demolition permit has been issued for the address, and a building permit for the site shows the construction of retail space in the $ 1.95 million project. The permit cites the creation of a “business structure”.
Chetanogo’s developer Basam Issa said he was not ready to make an announcement about the tenant for the property.
The permit stated that work on the building shell ended in late March 2021.
Friend-Daniel stated that “Since we are very early in the process, there is no additional information to share at this time.”
Earlier this year, he said the company was tracking new stores in Tennessee, including Chatanogo.
The spokesman said the Monrovia, California-based company is “always looking for great locations that will fit Trader Joe’s stores.” He said that the company aims to open 20 to 30 stores every year.
Trader Joe’s already has stores in Knoxville, Nashville and Germantown outside of Memphis in Tennessee. The company opened a second location in Nashville last year, at the same time a site started in Little Rock, Arkansas.

In 2017, a survey of 1,100 people by the city’s nonprofit redevelopment group River City Company showed that a merchant Joe’s market is among the retailers most wanted in Chatanagoga. Clothing retailer Urban Outfitters was the second.
