Mega Million and Jackball are making billions of dollars this week, as players did not win the top prize for months.
All in all, $ 1.3 billion is available – a $ 750 million jackpot expected in Friday’s Mega Millions drawing and $ 550 million for Powerball’s Wednesday night drawing. They rank second for the Yoga Mega Millions Jackpot and ninth largest for Powerball.
While those numbers are in the eye of players across the country, they are lower than the record $ 1.53 billion for Mega Millions in October 2018 and $ 1.58 billion for Powerball in January 2016. Still, the winning expectation is high, as seen through the increase in ticket sales across Pennsylvania.
This week, according to the Pennsylvania Lottery’s press secretary, Eva Swope, sales of mega-million in the state were up more than 700% compared to the same period last year, while Powerball sales were up 200%. As of Wednesday, sales reached $ 2,430 per minute for Mega MegaLions and Megaplier and $ 4,776 per minute for Powerball and Power Play.
“Ticket sales are increasing as Mega Millions and Powerball Jackpots grow,” Swope said. “As you might think, big jackpots definitely drive big sales.”
There is a division of money produced from those sales. Of every dollar, 65.5% goes to the winning prizes, 24.5% goes to senior programs, 7.4% goes to retailer and vendor commissions, and 2.6% goes to operating expenses for the state lottery agency.
According to the lottery website, in the 2019-20 fiscal year there was an amount of about $ 1.14 billion for senior programs, which ended on June 30.
Lottery players have been dying since September for Mega Millions and Powerball’s top prize, the last time anyone won the jackpot. For Mega Millions, Friday’s draw would be the 35th in the current run, or the longest roll in the history of the game.
During that time, both games produced few winners, with 25.5 million Mega Millions tickets deemed winners at all award levels and 41 valued at $ 1 million or more. A similar number was recorded for Powerball, with more than 24 million winning tickets sold from the last jackpot, including 24 tickets for $ 1 million and 10 tickets for $ 2 million.
Jackpot totals promoted by lottery are totals for those who opt for an annuity paid over 30 years. Those who choose the cash option get a little less. For the Mega Millions Jackpot, the cash option winners will receive $ 550.6 million, while the Powerball winner will take home $ 411.4 million.
Hard to reach the top prize in both games, with the possibility of winning Mega Millions in 302.5 million, and Powerball in 292.2 million. Both games are played in 45 states as well as Washington, DC and the US Virgin Islands. Powerball is also offered in Puerto Rico.
