Toll operator killed in accident at Bay Bridge, interrupted traffic

A collision at the Bay Bridge toll station killed a toll attendant and injured the driver of the truck and a pbadenger on Saturday morning.

The truck hit the toll plaza at 5:11 a.m., said Officer Vu Williams of the California Highway Patrol.

"A box truck went through the line and hit several vehicles and continued," Williams said. "It hit a toll booth … and inside there was a toll that was unfortunately murdered."

Williams said the driver and a pbadenger were thrown on the road and taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The accident is under investigation, and Williams said the cause of the accident has not been determined.

"We are investigating exactly why the driver lost control and hit the toll station, so we have to determine all the factors involved, including impediments, medical problems or mechanical problems," Williams said. He added that CHP believes that the collision was not an intentional act.

Williams said that the individual figure was completely destroyed, and that the rest of the structure was damaged where the collision occurred, although the traffic was still moving in other ways. "Lanes 14-17 have a difficult closure, which means they will be closed for a long time," Smith said.

The CHP estimated that the lanes would not fully open again until 5:30 p.m.

The 880 connector on the interstate highway to Interstate 80 closed and CHP directed all traffic eastbound.

"If people need to enter the city, they will have to turn around and go back using one of the other exits," Smith said.
