Macy’s has informed employees at its 45 department stores that they will be closed by the middle of this year, CNBC has learned.

The closure is part of a previously announced plan by Messi to close 125 locations by 2023, which the retailer outlined last February.

A spokesperson said in a statement to CNBC, “As previously announced, Messies is committed to empowering our store fleet by making our existing retail locations desirable and well-focused in traffic A and B malls.”

“To that end, we announced several store closures today, aligning to the guidance we provided in February 2020,” she said. “These closures bring us closer to achieving the right mix of mall-based stores.”

Liquidation sales have already started at some locations, and the rest is expected to begin later this month. A list of about 45 locations could not be immediately obtained by CNBC.

Messi operates 544 designated department stores, with 34 Bloomingdale’s locations, 19 Bloomingdale’s outlets and 166 Bluemarkery shops, according to its website.
