Tillerson assistant R.C. Department of State that departs Hammond

Highlights of the story

  • R.C. Hammond had been communications advisor to Tillerson
  • His departure comes amid uncertainty about Tillerson's future in management

Hammond had been Tillerson's communications advisor and key spokesman for the secretary.

The reason for his departure remains unclear but his departure coincides with the swearing in of the new undersecretary of State for public diplomacy of the department, Irwin Steven Goldstein. An official tells CNN that the Tillerson office hopes to develop a more cohesive communication strategy and a more positive relationship with the press under Goldstein.

Hammond has so far refused to comment with CNN.

His departure also occurs in the midst of uncertainty about his own future of Tillerson with the administration. Last week, several news outlets, including CNN, reported that the president had grown tired of Tillerson and was considering replacing him with CIA director Mike Pompeo. Trump denied those reports on Twitter, while Tillerson called them "ridiculous."
But Tillerson has faced criticism in recent months by members of Congress and former officials, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, who recently wrote that the departures of veteran diplomats represent a "national security emergency."
And Hammond is not Tillerson's first badistant to leave the administration. Last week, an official in charge of managing a major redesign of the department resigned after only three months.

Before joining the State Department, Hammond served as a spokesman for the presidential campaign of former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich, and then ran his own public relations firm.
