Tiger Woods missed the fairways, not the opportunities to open the PGA Championship

Tiger Woods had not opened a major championship in the 60s since 2014, when he made his Open debut with a 69 at Royal Whirlpool. On Thursday, in the first round of the PGA Championship, it did not look like it would be the day he broke the streak.

During a stretch, he missed five consecutive fairways. And the thicker part of TPC Harding Park causes problems. Still there were Woods, finding ways to evoke pars and stealth in some birds. A round that could have easily been 74 or 75 turned into a 2-under 68. So instead of being a nonfactor, Woods is in the mix after his initials.

His day started with the 10th hole. Here’s how it all went down:

Number 10: Par 5, 562 yards

Tiger Woods opens with the bird… but it was an adventure. Drive missed Farewell. 3-Wood tries to drill, misses the way, the way is right. Then he moves a wedge up to 10 feet and makes a put. Hey, wouldn’t it be great if it all adds up to a 4 at 5.

While No. 10, Tiger Woods’ first hole of the day, was an exciting ride, he eased his way to a Ho-Hume equalizer on the 11th. Shot the tee to 20 feet, two put, par 3.

The pars are good, especially when you see partner Rory McIlroy and world number 1 Justin Thomas hacking around and making bogey in the 12th. But Tiger Woods wasted a great opportunity for birdie after a perfect drive and a right-back approach with a full-on birdie put.

Sometimes in golf things balance themselves. Tiger Woods misses for Birdie 10 feet inside on the 12th, then rolls one from 33 feet in the 13th. Yes, it can be fun like golf. Or driving you crazy. You decide But through four holes, Woods looks confident in his body and game.

You don’t often see this happen. Tiger Woods took a walk after his 6-foot save to equalize. This means that he knows he made it. Except, well, he didn’t. He snatched his way from the green. First hiccup of the day and first shot on the 14th.

Number 15: Par 4, 401 yards

Tiger Woods’ second shot was 115 yards from the 15th green with a keel in his hand – there was no other way to put it, it was terrible – leaving him with a mile-long birdie put. He navigates a two-put par to avoid a bogey that really annoyed him.

The 16th is not a hard hole. In fact, it is the smallest par 4 from TPC Harding Park. Nevertheless, a wrong tee shot and a tortured play from the bunker forced Tiger to scramble. He saved equally, but got more work than he should have.

A drama-free par 3 on 17th for Tiger Woods. He needed that last few holes after a few interesting moments.

Tiger Woods scored a steal in the final hole of his first side. A wide-left drive left him a buried lie, so bad that he had no chance of reaching the green from just 140 yards. A gouge and a chip left him 40 feet for par. And he rolled on his first nine holes of this PGA Championship to post a 1-under 35.

Tiger Woods keeps the missing fairways, but he largely avoids the cost of the shots. He again misses his 10th hole of the day, at No. 1, but navigates another equalizer despite a mistake from the tee. He is under 1 even though he does not feel or look like he.

Remember that one about Tiger Woods not needing to get himself out of danger and spending himself for any shot? Okay, scratch. After another tee shot, what he missed ended with the bogey. He is asking for trouble all day and goes back to par.

An easy par 3 on third for Tiger Woods. They have tried to keep life simple in small holes. It is the tee shots with the driver or 3-wood in his hands that has caused issues.

What a strange, strange period for Tiger Woods. He misses his fifth straight fairway, this time in the par-5 4 hole. As far as possible his muscles are to be taken from under Farewell. He still has 160 yards left for his third shot … and fills it to 4 feet for a birdie. Somehow, despite losing to T, he is 1 again.

Number 7: Par 4, 340 yards

Early in his career, Tiger Woods always found a way to take a so-called ball striking round and turn it into a 60-something. It is happening in the first round of the PGA Championship. He hits an iron from the seventh tee, knocks his approach to 15, then rolls to another bird. He is 3-under, two shots away from the lead, which is impressive because he has missed so many fairways.
