Most people were introduced to the idea of wearing masks when the pandemic started, but doctors and medical professionals have been doing it for their entire professional lives. And although you probably know a lot About masks at this point, it’s understandable to be curious which face coverings off-duty doctors wear.
After all, medical professionals need protection at the grocery store and also when running errands. And, since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released new guidelines on masks, most people are thinking about masks lately.
At work, 13 medical professionals from various fields tell Yahoo Life that they wear an N95 or surgical mask. Outside of work, some say they will continue to wear N95 masks. But, since the CDC still recommends that they be reserved for healthcare workers, we focus only on the disposable and cloth options they are looking for. This is what doctors use for face masks when not seeing patients.
Most medical professionals say they like to wear a surgical-style mask outside of work. “I just wear a disposable surgical mask,” infectious disease expert Dr. Amesh A. Adalja, principal investigator at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Safety, tells Yahoo Life. Dr. Timothy Murphy, senior associate dean for clinical and translational research at the University at Buffalo, tells Yahoo Life that it doubles up on surgical masks. “When I go out, I’ve gotten used to wearing two surgical masks, one knotted for a snug fit, to take advantage of both the extra layers and the snug fit to maximize protection for myself and others,” he says. And Dr. Gloria A Bachmann, medical director of the PROUD New Jersey Gender Center at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine, tells Yahoo Life that she opts for a “standard disposable mask” with no “distinctive features or messages” for a reason . “I want to send the universal message that we are all in this together, that wearing a mask while working, shopping, walking around the neighborhood, etc., is the only thing we can all do as a team,” he says. .

For everyday use outside of the clinic and hospital, Dr. Angela Caswell-Monack, OB / GYN at Women’s Wellness of Southern Delaware, looks for these popular face masks from Old Navy. One big advantage of these face masks, he tells Yahoo Life, is the adjustable ear cups. “I can tighten the lower strap more and it fits my cheeks more,” he says.

Several doctors say they have been following the new CDC recommendations for double-masking. Dr. Richard Watkins, an infectious disease physician and professor of internal medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University, tells Yahoo Life that he will place a surgical or cloth mask on top of a medical procedure mask for additional protection. “I don’t want to take risks,” he says. Women’s health expert Dr. Jennifer Wider tells Yahoo Life that she also likes double masking, especially at the grocery store: “Surgical mask underneath and cloth overhead.” Wider says Umma’s fabric face masks are her favorites, they have multiple layers and a “tight” nose wire.

Dr. Jessica Shepherd, a Texas OB / GYN, is a huge fan of these masks. “It has a soft fabric that is treated with Silvadur antimicrobial preservative technology,” he tells Yahoo Life. That technology helps prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and fungi that can cause your mask to smell or discolor over time. “They are washable and reusable, and they are reinforced with a mesh lining,” he says. “But I love that it also comes with a storage bag.”

Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist and professor at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, tells Yahoo Life that he alternates between wearing a surgical mask and a multilayer black cloth mask when out walking. Several doctors use PM 2.5 filters to help further enhance their cloth face masks. “If I’m not wearing the surgical mask that I wore all day, I tend to wear one of my cloth masks,” Dr. Sophia Tolliver, a family medicine physician at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, tells Yahoo Life. “It has a triple layer with a PM 2.5 particle insert for added protection.” Dr. David Cennimo, assistant professor of infectious disease medicine-pediatrics at Rutgers New Jersey School of Medicine, tells Yahoo Life that he usually wears the same procedural mask that he wears all day at work. “It seems less wasteful,” he says. But he also uses cloth masks. “They are all triple-layer material with a filter element,” he says.
