LONDON (AP) – The British newspaper The Telegraph apologized and paid damages to First Lady Melania Trump of the United States after publishing an article that says it contains many false statements.

The newspaper said on Saturday that it apologizes "unreservedly" to Mrs. Trump and her family for any embarrbadment caused by the content of a cover story published on January 19 in the supplement to the newspaper's weekly magazine.

"As a sign of our regret, we have agreed to pay Mrs. Trump substantial damages, as well as her legal costs," The Telegraph said. The newspaper did not disclose the size of the agreement with Mrs. Trump.

The Telegraph said it falsely characterized the personality of Mrs. Trump's father, falsely reported the reasons why she abandoned an architecture program and falsely reported that her modeling career was unsuccessful before she met Donald Trump.

"We accept that Ms. Trump was a successful professional model before meeting her husband and getting her own modeling job without her help," the newspaper said, and acknowledged that she had incorrectly reported the year the couple met.

"The claim that Mrs. Trump cried the night of the election is also false," said The Telegraph.

He also recanted the claim that Ms. Trump's father, mother and sister had moved to New York in 2005 to live in buildings owned by Trump.
