The first trailer for “The Suicide Squad” was released on Friday, and the next DC Extended Universe movie looks nothing like its horrendous predecessor.
That 2016 movie, starring Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Jared Leto, Viola Davis and David Harbor, grossed $ 746.8 million at the global box office, but critics hated it.
Director David Ayer’s film currently has 26 percent on RottenTomatoes, and in his review, The Post critic Kyle Smith said: “What promised to be a Super Bowl of villainy turned out to be more like playtime for children little ones”.
Now director James Gunn of the popular Marvel movies “Guardians of the Galaxy” has rebooted the DC series – no it’s not a sequel – injecting his trademark humor and staying close to Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Davis’ Amanda Waller and Captain Boomerang by Jai Courtney. Most of the villains are new to the Squad, and Will Smith, who left due to conflicting programming, is notably absent.
This time around, we meet Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and Peacemaker (John Cena), Blackguard (Pete Davidson), Thinker (Peter Capaldi) and King Shark (voiced by Sylvester Stallone), among other new cast members.
Warner Bros. ‘jungle-set reboot, which is expected to have an R rating, also looks a lot more colorful than the murky 2016 movie, which is a stark contrast to Zack Snyder’s recent cut from “League of the Dead.” Justice”.
“The Suicide Squad” hits theaters and at HBO Max on August 6.
