A day after presenting his first vehicle at the Los Angeles Auto Show, an electric pickup called R1T, Rivian, a Michigan-based auto company, is already doing a second. Built on the same platform as the truck, the second Rivian vehicle will be a seven-passenger SUV in a style found somewhere between a Land Rover and the toughest Jeep offerings.
By the end of 2020, the R1S will be a bit more expensive than the Rivian van when it goes on sale, with the base model starting at $ 72,500. Advance orders begin this week, with a $ 1,000 refundable deposit required.
Apart from its shape, the R1S (as it is called the SUV) coincides mainly with the hit of the R1T truck. It will be available in three different configurations of battery packs, with a 105kWh version with capacity for approximately 240 miles of range, a variant of 135kWh that can last around 310 miles and a first line option with 180kWh capacity, pushing the range of more than 410 miles. Those range estimates are each slightly higher than Rivian expects his truck to draw from the same battery packs. (It is also noteworthy that the 180kWh version will only have capacity for five).
The Rivian SUV will be as fast as its pickup truck brother, with the base model reaching 60 miles per hour in 4.9 seconds, and the two higher specification models will reach that speed in only about three seconds. This is because the SUV will have the same four-engine distribution as the pickup truck, which means that an electric motor will drive each wheel for precise performance of all-wheel drive. While the base model will have 400 horsepower, the 135kWh version will have 750 horsepower. That number is reduced to 700 horsepower in the 180kWh version of the R1S.
Inside the SUV, a 15.6-inch touch screen occupies a large part of the board, while a second 12.3-inch screen sits behind the wheel. A third touch screen, measuring 6.8 inches, is located on the back of the center console, within reach of the rear passengers. The R1S will also be equipped with sensors capable of allowing the SUV to drive only in certain situations, according to Rivian.
The R1S also has the same front trunk as the R1T, with 11.7 cubic feet (330 liters) of storage space, as well as a similar similar spare wheel container on the floor near the rear of the car. It does not have the "gear tunnel" that presents the Rivian pickup truck, and it also has less storage space under the seats compared to the R1T.
That said, the R1S has the same kind of robust and luxurious style as the Rivian pickup. The interior presents many elements of wood mixed with a resistant fabric. Rivian's CEO, RJ Scaringe, said The edge before the launch, he wants the company's vehicles to have a "Patagonia rating", and that is reflected in the R1S. He also said that the versions of the SUV and the van that were shown at the LA Auto Show this week are "extremely close" to what will be sent in a few years.
The Rivian truck has a laser focus on utility that places it in a niche that is somewhat more specific than the SUV of the startup. The SUV will also face much more competition. Tesla is months away from presenting the Model Y, a smaller successor to its luxury SUV, the Model X. Jaguar began production of its first all-electric SUV this year, the I-Pace, as did Audi with the e-tron . Mercedes-Benz showed the all-electric EQC this year, which will also be launched in 2020. Meanwhile, several large and small Chinese companies (such as NIO or SF Motors) also manufacture electric SUVs destined for multiple markets around the world. . Others, like Byton, are moving along the same path.
But that does not mean there is not room for something like the R1S in the market, especially because SUV sales have skyrocketed in recent years. In addition, the Jeeps and Land Rovers of the world have moved much more slowly when it comes to electrify their fleets.
