Blizzard has announced the return of the Winter Wonderland event for Overwatch for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. It starts next week and introduces a variety of new content for free, as well as bringing back something we saw last year. . And, yes, there are new masks on the way.
As detailed in the new update video of the previous developer, Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan revealed that Winter Wonderland 2017 includes a "long-awaited Hanzo skin" that was previously seen in one of the comics Roadhog and Junkrat are confirmed to receive new legendary skins, although they will not be the only ones included; the fans were upset with the amount of legendaries from last year. Unfortunately, none of these were shown, and the next brief preview only shows one of Mei's existing masks.
Last year's event saw two maps, King & # 39; s Row and Hanamura, get what Blizzard calls a "season pbad", where it is decorated for the event. Those two will make a return, while the map of the Black Forest Arena will also receive one of these season pbades. Kaplan described this as "one of the most beautiful works [Blizzard’s] that environmental artists have ever done". A limited time mode, Mei & # 39; s Snowball Offensive, will also return and now you can play both in Ecopoint: Antarctica and in this winter version of Black Forest.
Blizzard will also present another new Meicentric Fight, which Kaplan compared to a boss fight. Mei's Yeti Hunt confronts a five-man Mei team against a Winston player in what looks a lot like Evolve's basic concept. The five Meis try to chase Winston while looking for power-ups. Once you have collected enough, you will enter the Primal Ira mode, at which time the Meis have to flee to avoid being killed. Once Meis or Winston is killed, the game ends.
Kaplan said that, with this mode, Blizzard wanted to try something "funny and different", admitting that he was destined to be stupid. He said the point is "just to be fun, light and refreshing for a short period of time", rather than a serious and truly competitive way to be used in electronic sports.
Winter Wonderland is released on all platforms on December 12 as a free update. Presumably, this will work as past events, with players receiving a free booty loot to log in and the standard box being replaced by a seasonal version that includes new skins and limited-time cosmetics. An end date of the event has not been announced.
