Niantic Labs has really come a long way since it started as Google in 2012. It has become one of the biggest and sometimes most controversial names in the mobile gaming business thanks to the fame and infamy of both sides of Pokemon GO. But years before that, Niantic had his own baby, his own vision. That child was Ingress, who may have been born too far ahead of his time. But now, the timing may be right and Niantic is taking advantage of that to launch Ingress 2.0: Ingress Prime.
The income did not gain mbadive appeal probably for two reasons. First was the theme of the game itself, set in an almost futuristic world superimposed on ours, which revolved around a literally figuratively nebulous thing called XM, abbreviation of exotic matter. It was novel and, in a way, strange. Again, literally and figuratively.
The second was the type of game itself. It's called augmented reality, but, in reality, it was more like a mobile game based on location that did not appeal to AR fans or mobile players. Fortunately, it was the exact type of game that the Pokemon Company was looking for. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Niantic, however, has a fondness for his firstborn and will not give up on Ingress. Instead, he will use the lessons learned, the technology obtained and the humans employed in his Pokemon adventure to feed Ingress Prime. The underlying technology has been renewed, the design has been polished and the central theme of the game has been adjusted to something more understandable for newcomers. With luck, without postponing the few remaining Ingress loyalists.
Those are very ambitious goals, especially for a company that will soon have a lot on its plate. His development of Pokemon GO is far from over and, in 2018, he will add two more titles to his belt, including Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. While Niantic definitely has a place for Ingress in its heart, it remains to be seen how it will fare when faced with two larger and more profitable properties.
