The former NFL runner accused of murder in the death of a 5-year-old girl who was abused

A former NFL football rider arrested in Las Vegas on suspicion of child abuse now faces murder charges after the 5-year-old girl died. KLAS-TV reports that Las Vegas police arrested 28-year-old Cork Wood on Wednesday and added the murder charge Thursday. He was originally charged with child abuse and neglect in the first degree. The Clark County coroner's office says La-Rayah Davis, 5, died as a result of child abuse. Police have also accused the girl's mother, Amy Taylor, of child abuse and neglect. NSNV reports Taylor is Wood's girlfriend. Police said the girl had bruises on her torso, legs and abdomen when doctors examined her. An autopsy revealed a liver laceration. The girl's father, Danuan Davis, was excited during a court hearing for Wood. "You hurt my son on purpose," he said. "I never thought I was going to bury my son when he was 5 years old." Davis now believes he saw warning signs before his daughter's death. "Every time I picked her up in the last few months, I was afraid to go home," Davis explained. "She kept telling me something was wrong." Now he wants justice. "I really wish I could talk to her again, I'm sorry I did not hear," Davis said. A GoFundMe account has been created for the funeral of La-Rayah. Wood played in college at Notre Dame and spent time in the NFL with Houston, New England and Buffalo. He was recently released by Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League in 2017.
