The following explains how to know if your child has an addiction to the screen

Do you want to know if your children are becoming zombies obsessed with technology? Focus on how they use their selected devices, not how much time they spend with them, according to a new study.

Researchers at the University of Michigan studied media addiction in children 4 to 11 years of age. They discovered that "there is more than the number of hours" that children spend on their computers or tablets, writes study co-author Sarah Domoff in a press release.

"What matters most is whether the use of screens causes problems in other areas of life or has become a consuming activity," says Domoff.

Computer screen addiction for children is a bit like addiction to alcohol for adults: they obsessively think about screen media, allow it to interfere with family activities, and experience frustration and withdrawal when they are separated from your technology

Other red flags for screen addiction include sneaking around to use devices, losing interest in non-screen activities, and having difficulty leaving their machines.

To combat addiction to technology, Dr. Richard Graham, chief technology advisor at Nightingale Hospital in London, recommends that parents dedicate time activities "without technology" to help their children re-establish interest in the world beyond iPads and video ga mes.

"Even swimming, going to a football game or even going to the movies can have a positive effect," Graham tells Metro UK.
