DENVER (CBS4) – The first FDA-approved prescription drug made with pure cannabis is expected to hit the market in the next few months and, unless lawmakers act, Colorado can Being the only one claim that they can not sell it.
The medication may be the only hope for some children with epilepsy, such as Vienne Weinert Wood. His mother, Chris Wood, says they tried seven medications, a special diet and a brain pacemaker. The options are running out.
"They say that once you failed two drugs you are at about one percent of possibilities for something else to work, so we need all the options available to us, "said Wood.
A new drug called Epidiolex offers hope. It is made of pure CBD, the non-psychotropic chemical in cannabis. But in Colorado, pharmacies can not sell cannabis and dispensaries can not sell drugs approved by the FDA.

"What would have meant that these children would not have access," said Rep. Lois Landgraf, a Republican representing Colorado Springs.

She and Rep. Janet Buckner, a Democrat representing Aurora, is sponsoring a bill that would allow pharmacies to sell Epidiolex and dispensaries to continue selling other CBD-based products that some children with epilepsy already used.

"Parents can still go to those dispensaries and get the product for their children." The other option now is that they can get a prescription from their doctor that a pharmacist can legally fill out and this would be a regulated product. "

Wood says he has not decided if Epidiolex is right for Vienne, but he wants the option to fill a prescription in Colorado, "The way it's OK now in Colorado, I can get dog biscuits with CBD, but I can not get a medication based of cannabis approved by the FDA. "
Vienne does not give up," We want to eliminate the epi lepsia. I want to take it off myself. I want to go skiing again. I can not ski anymore. "
Your mother also wants that," She has a shot to have a normal life if we can stop the seizures. This trip is not easy, but it makes it much easier to be who you are. "
