James herself has been blamed for the lackluster reviews of the films.
Sam Taylor-Johnson, who directed the first film, the best-reviewed of the series, complained that the author exerted as much creative control as she was allowed over the production.

James went so far as to have her husband Niall Leonard write the scripts for the sequels, which were poorly received.
