When Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, was not a duchess and knew her maiden name, Camilla Shand, she met Andrew Parker Bowles. Years later, the two would get married. Keep reading to learn the crazy way they got engaged, which sounds almost too extravagant to be true.
How Camilla met Andrew Parker Bowles
Camilla and Andrew met in 1965 at their debutante party. Author Penny Junor wrote about the couple's first meeting in their book, The Duchess: Camilla Parker Bowles and the love story that shook the crown.
"He was 25 years old and he was a pretty beautiful officer in the Domestic Cavalry; She was 17 years old, but she was very sure of herself, "Junor wrote." Andrew came up to her and simply said, "Let's dance." They danced and she fell in love. "
Camilla and Andrew left, then met Prince Charles.
Camilla and Andrew began to leave but they separated and it was when she met Prince Carlos in 1970 at a polo match where they were introduced by a mutual friend, Lucía Santa Cruz.
"The [Prince Charles] "I loved the fact that she smiled with her eyes and with her mouth, and laughed at the same nonsense that he did," Junor wrote in his book, according to People. "In short, he was very impressed with her, and after that first meeting he started calling her."
She and Prince Charles started dating but they separated when she left in the HMS frigate with the Royal Navy in early 1973. Although they both liked it, the couple did not have a conversation about staying together while Prince Charles was with the Royal Navy.
When Prince Charles left, Camilla and Andrew reconnected and rekindled their romance of previous years.
How Camilla and Andrew engaged
Camilla's father and Andrew's brother conspired together to take the couple to the altar. They posted a commitment announcement in a local newspaper for Camilla and Andrew even though they were not engaged, according to Good Housekeeping.
Andrew, a well-known bachelor, proposed to Camilla after the two men forced their hand. Camilla and Andrew were married on July 4, 1973.
Marriage devastated Prince Charles
Camilla's marriage to Andrew would have devastated Prince Charles. "He found it particularly cruel, he wrote in a letter, that after" such a happy, peaceful and mutually happy relationship, "fate had decreed that it should last only six months," Junor said.
Camilla and Andrew's children.
Camilla had two children with her first wife, as did Prince Charles, during her first marriage.
Camilla and Andrew welcomed their son, Tom, on December 18, 1974. Today, Tom is a food critic and has two children. He has also written cookbooks.
"I loved eating and I could almost put together a sentence, so I thought I could write about food," Tom said of becoming a food critic.
Four years after Camilla and Andrew welcomed Tom, they had their second child, a daughter named Laura, on January 1, 1978. Laura grew up and founded an art gallery in Belgravia. In 2006 he married Harry Lopes, a former Calvin Klein model.
Andrew and Camilla divorced in 1995 after more than 20 years of marriage. During their marriage, Andrew supposedly learned about Camilla's affair with Prince Charles.
"Andrew was not in a position to complain; "And when he discovered what was happening, he wisely did not make a fuss," Junor wrote in his book.
"Some would say that part of him really enjoyed the fact that his wife was sleeping with the future King; I could have felt different if Charles had been a street vendor. "
