OAKLAND, California (AP) – DeMarcus Cousins has a torn left quadriceps muscle that will leave the Golden State center indefinitely, a devastating injury that the Warriors feared was serious when he fell in the first quarter of his first round in the playoff loss to the Clippers.
An MRI exam on Tuesday morning on Cousins' left leg revealed the tear. The two-time defending NBA champion, Warriors, said Cousins will begin rehabilitation immediately and that the updates will be "proportionate as appropriate."
Coach Steve Kerr said after the loss of the Warriors' 135-131 Game 2 on Monday night that Cousins would be out for a significant period.
Playing only in his second postseason game of his career after a nine-year wait, Cousins fell in the first quarter to the Golden State bench after pbading a ball from Patrick Beverley on the back court. Immediately he grabbed his left quadrangle. The cousins approached the locker room at the 8:09 mark.
The cousins had just returned in January after an absence of almost a year after surgery for a left Achilles tendon trait that he suffered while he was with the pelicans last season.
He had two points, two rebounds and one badist in less than 4 minutes on Monday. He came out of the game 1 win on Saturday 121-104 with nine points, nine rebounds and four badists in 21 minutes.
"I know it's frustrating for him, I've been through something like that, I've been hurt, I've recovered all the way and then I've hurt myself again, so I know how frustrating it is," said Warriors center Kevon Looney. "He's a tough guy, he's already been through adversity and I know he's going to recover, it's likely that his spirit is low now, but he's a tough guy and he'll come back better than ever."
Looney accumulated more minutes with Cousins' injury and scored 19 points, the most of his career, while making six shots in 19 minutes. It is likely that Kerr will use a combination of blocking shots from Andrew Bogut and Looney in this postseason.
The signing of Bogut last month for a second term with the franchise means much more now. Kerr called it an "insurance policy" and Bogut, who had been playing at home in Australia, has made the most of his chances. He had nine rebounds, three points and a blocked shot in 16 minutes on Monday.
He played in the 2015 Warriors championship team and in the 73-win team the following season he lost in Game 7 of the NBA Finals to LeBron James and the Cavaliers.
Bogut, the first pick in the No. 1 draft in 2005 in Utah, has been open to whatever role Kerr chooses for him, which could now be starting.
"Obviously, there will be more minutes," he said after the game. "It will still depend on the match, but I think I'll probably start the games, play the first three or four minutes and then we'll come out."
Stephen Curry expects backups to fill the void as the depth of the Warriors has throughout the season, and Jordan Bell will also be in the mix.
"Exactly what they have been doing, they have been playing amazingly the last part of the regular season and these first two games," Curry said. "… It may seem a bit different considering the skill, talent and level that Boogie can bring when he's healthy."
