Steam Link, a free application that allows players to play PC games on mobile devices, is now available for download on Apple platforms, including the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.
The introduction of Steam is a surprise after an episode in May 2018 in which Valve, the parent company of Steam, publicly said that the Apple App Store had rejected the application for "commercial conflicts".
Steam Link uses the processing power of a desktop or laptop computer to transmit graphic intensity games purchased from Steam to mobile devices or set-top boxes through a home network.
Games are an important component of Apple's app store, and Steam is essentially a cross-platform app store for PC games. The App Store rules allow Apple to reject any application that includes a distribution platform for applications, but last summer, Apple updated its guidelines to enable reflex services such as Steam Link, provided that purchases are made on the desktop.
"We would love Valve's games and services to be on iOS and AppleTV," Apple's vice president of marketing Phil Schiller said in an email to some customers last May. "Unfortunately, the review team discovered that Valve's Steam iOS application, as it currently stands, violates a set of guidelines on user-generated content, in-app purchases, content codes, etc.
Steam Link has been available for Android users in beta since last year. In March, Apple announced Apple Arcade, a subscription service for games backed by Apple for iPhones and other Apple devices.
The Steam Link application requires a 5 Ghz Wi-Fi network or an Ethernet cable connection. It is compatible with the Steam controller, as well as the drivers designed for iPhones and iPads, the company said in a statement.
Apple did not immediately return a comment request. A representative of Valve did not specify whether changes were made to the Steam Link application to ensure Apple's approval.
