Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Issues Order Banning ‘Vaccine Passports’

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on Monday issued an executive order banning so-called “vaccine passports,” saying a system to track those who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 infringes on citizens’ rights.

“Every day, Texans are returning to normal life as more people receive the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine. But, as I’ve said all along, these vaccines are always voluntary and never forced,” Abbott told announce the executive order. .

“The government should not require any Texan to show proof of vaccination and reveal private medical information just to go about their daily life,” he added. “That’s why I issued an executive order banning government-required vaccine passports in Texas. We will continue to vaccinate more Texans and protect public health, and we will do so without trampling on the personal freedoms of Texans.”

Abbott has come under pressure in recent weeks for the lifting of a statewide mask mandate and its handling of a major snowstorm that left residents without power or heat for days.

“We always said we wanted to provide it for everyone but force it on none,” DeSantis said. “And that was something that, although it was advised that you take it especially if you are vulnerable, we were not going to force you to do so.”

DeSantis said it was “completely unacceptable for the government or the private sector to require you to show proof of vaccine to simply participate in normal society.”
