Tennessee Volunteers AD John Currie defends the search for coaching, research by Greg Schiano

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee athletic director John Currie is defending the process of his search for coaches and attesting to the character of Greg Schiano a day after negotiations between the two parties broke down amid a public reaction.

Currie issued a statement on Monday acknowledging that the defensive coordinator for the state of Ohio was one of the top candidates for the vacancy of volunteer trainers without explaining why the two sides split up.

Currie says that Tennessee "interviewed and examined carefully" Schiano and that the former Rutgers coach and the NFL "received the highest recommendations."

The school and Schiano were close to an agreement on Sunday before the agreement collapsed after a protest on campus and complaints on the fan's social networks, s Tate Representatives and gubernatorial candidates.

Tennessee seeks to fill its vacancy as a coach following the dismissal of Butch Jones on November 12.
