British police said Wednesday they were responding to a “serious injury accident” after a taxi hit pedestrians in London’s busy Covent Garden area.
The Metropolitan Police force said it was believed to be a traffic collision and not terrorism.
Witnesses reported on Twitter that a black London cab had mounted the sidewalk. Police said the taxi driver stopped at the scene and had been detained.
The London Ambulance Service said it had crews on the scene, but there was no immediate word on the number of casualties.
London is more colorful and dynamic than ever
The Transport for London authority said several roads were closed “due to a serious collision.”
The Covent Garden area — full of shops, restaurants and a busy market — is one of London’s most popular tourist spots.
