According to The Tacoma News-Tribune report, a police officer in Washington state has been temporarily on leave after his patrol vehicle landed through a crowd of pedestrians late Saturday.
In footage made available to the newspaper by an eyewitness, the patrol vehicle can be seen contacting a group of pedestrians who had allegedly gathered at the downtown Takoma intersection to watch a road race.
As the vehicle moved closer to the intersection, more people could be seen walking towards it. The vehicle could be seen in the back before moving into the crowd, apparently with some people running.
According to local paper, one person was sent to the hospital after the incident.
Several vehicles and about 100 people blocked the intersection when officers arrived at the scene. Responding to the location, Tacoma police officers began cleaning the intersection for the safety of vehicles and people who were gathering and trying to use the road, ”the Tacoma Police Department told the paper .
“During the operation, an answering Tacoma police vehicle was surrounded by a crowd,” the department continued. The agency claimed that “people killed the body of the police vehicle and its windows as the officer was stopped in the street.”
“The officer, fearing for his safety, tried to go back, but was unable to do so due to the crowd. The officer activated his lights and siren, “the office said,” while trying to extricate himself from an unsafe situation, the officer attacked one person and affected others. “
The department said it has submitted an investigation into the incident to county officials.
In a statement to the paper, Interim Police Chief Mike AK said he was concerned that the department is “making another use of the fatal incident.”
“I am sending my thoughts to someone injured in tonight’s incident, and am committed to assessing the full cooperation of our department in independent investigations and the actions of the department’s response during the incident,” he said.
The department faced several weeks of protests against police brutality following the death of Manuel Ellis last March.
Ellis, a black man, died at the age of 33 in Tacoma. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office decided his death after he died of respiratory arrest caused by physical restraint after local police controlled him on the ground in handcuffs.
