LOS ANGELES – The next generation of the Jeep Wrangler, a model intrinsically linked to the history and future success of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, will make its anticipated debut on Wednesday night at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

The new Wrangler, to be built exclusively in Toledo and will continue the sale in January is familiar and progressive.
As Fiat Chrysler has shown in the first photographs, the shape and concept remain the same. It's still a four-for-four ready for off-road use that prioritizes capacity over almost anything else.
But there's a lot of technology added inside the vehicle.
The Wrangler receives a couple of new transmissions, three engine options, including a diesel, that will help improve its fuel economy and driving ability. There are also a number of features for the first time that include a retractable top, a backup camera and a full-time all-wheel drive system.
Jeep officials say that many of the updates and changes occurred due to conversations with their customers.

At first glance, not much, and since Jeep sells about 200,000 Wranglers a year, that's not surprising.
The new Wrangler, known internally and by enthusiasts for its JL model designation, maintains the slab design it has had since its inception, the round headlights, the square taillights and the option to drive in bad open air.
However, there are some subtle style changes.
Mr. Gilles and his team added a new body crease just below the side windows and integrated the turn signals and daytime running lights on the front fenders. They also cut in a functional ventilation behind the front fender. Officials say the function is aimed at eliminating the flapping of the hood that could sometimes plague the current Wrangler.
Designers tackled the aerodynamics where they could, including a steeper windshield. And the Wrangler also makes use of lighter materials, particularly aluminum. While the body is still made of steel, the doors, bonnet, front panels, windshield and rear cargo door are all stamped in aluminum.
What engines is it?
The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine – the only engine available in the current Wrangler – carriers more like the base engine, which produces 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque.
There's also an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that Fiat Chrysler says will make 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.
A version of the company's 3-liter EcoDiesel will also be launched, although it will not be available until the 2019 model year. FCA has not yet provided diesel power figures.
All engines are available with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which replaces the five-speed automatic of the current model. A new six-speed manual gearbox is optional on the V-6. The four cylinders and the next diesel are only automatic.
The V-6 and diesel will get the engine start-stop technology that cuts the engine when the vehicle is stopped and restarts it when the driver releases the brake.
Highway fuel savings improves by approximately 15 percent with the V-6, although FCA has not yet released figures figures for the diesel or four-cylinder.

What's new inside?
The interior of the Wrangler is completely redesigned. Officials say they sought inspiration in the history of the Wrangler, which led to a more symmetrical board that recalls the design in the early CJ models.
Mark Allen, Jeep's chief designer, said the team had two main objectives for the new vehicle.
"One was the appearance of the vehicle, it was my intention to obtain a lot of heritage in the vehicle, and the other simply to improve absolutely every part of the experience".

Beyond the looks, Allen said one of the key areas in which his team tried to improve the Wrangler was visibility.

A backup camera, perfectly integrated into the spare tire holder, is standard throughout the line.

What about the outdoor experience?
One feature that enthuse dealers is the retractable canvas roof, available on all four Unlimited Model doors.
Buyers of Sahara and Rubicon siding have the option of a rigid body-colored roof, while rigid black panels are available throughout the line. There are also a couple of soft-top folding options.
As with the previous Wranglers, the doors are removable. Officials say they have added a notch under the armrests that make the doors easier to handle when they are out of the vehicle.
The folding windscreen also comes back, a somewhat surprising element because of the little that was used in the current Wrangler.
"The manufacturing industry hated it for painting … engineering said we would never do it again, and nobody asked for it," Allen said. "But it's a piece of history, it's important to me." It is the most unique automotive experience that can be obtained when the windshield is folded. "
In the current Wrangler, you have to remove about 28 bolts to bend the windshield." By making the windshield and surrounding a separate part of the structural body, Jeep was able to reduce that to four bolts.

Jeep says the approach, break and exit angles are on par or improved from the current model.
