Supermoon will be visible for the only time in 2017

For the first and only time in 2017, a visible super moon will illuminate the sky from midnight.

The supermoon will appear 7 percent larger and 16 percent brighter to the naked eye, wrote Gordon Johnston, an executive with NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft system. The moon will appear larger during the night after 12:45 a.m. ET, but those who may not be ready to see her during the night can also take a look from Sunday evening until dawn on Monday.

This lunar event seems to take a back seat compared to the more exaggerated lunar events that occurred in the last year, such as the supermoon in November 2016 and the total solar eclipse in August. Unlike the eclipse, however, this lunar event is safe to see with the naked eye and does not require special glbades or eye protection.

The last moon last year was the closest to Earth's orbit since 1948, says NASA, and will not return until 2034.
