A new version of SteelSeries’ Arctis 9 Wireless Gaming Headset is available from today for $ 199.99. The design and feature set almost exactly match the SteelSeries Arctis 9X. But while the Arctic 9X supports Xbox One (and is further compatible to the Xbox series S / X), the new Arctis 9 is compatible with PCs and PlayStation 4, with compatibility for PS5 ensured at launch. And while the Arctic 9X does not require a dongle to connect to the Xbox, the Arcit 9 requires an included USB receiver that you can toggle from PC to PlayGift, depending on the platform you plugged in to is.
Otherwise, the new headset boasts the same claim for 20 hours of battery life and the ability to simultaneously connect via 2.4GHz wireless and Bluetooth – a feature I like very much. If you listen to your game audio it is great to listen to this podcast or take a call on your phone.
Control on this new headset is also unchanged, with a chat and game audio mix dial that is easily accessible on the back side of the left ear cup. Unfortunately, this feature is currently only usable on PC in the way Sony currently handles routing game audio and audio chat via USB on its PlayStation console. The left ear cup also has a retractable boom microphone.
Everything else is placed on the cup of the right ear. Here you’ll find a 3.5mm jack that offers wired listening options, a microUSB port for charging, buttons and Bluetooth to turn on the headset, a mic mute button, and finally, a master volume dial.
We are joining companies in gaming headsets that claim to be ready for the next generation of consoles. While brands such as SteelSeries and Turtle Beach persist while releasing headsets specifically made for each platform, other options such as the Audeze Penrose and Astro A20 Gen 2 can work with both consoles – that is, if you both Wireless receivers are for the Xbox series S / X and PS5.
I expect even more headsets to come near this launch because their launch has a console, so if you’re in the market, there won’t be a shortage of options to choose from.
