Steelers rally from 14-point deficit, pull out victory at Indianapolis

Updated 1 hour in the past

INDIANAPOLIS — Ryan Shazier may inform one thing was off lengthy earlier than the ball was teed up at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

“We definitely didn’t have the energy we normally have,” Shazier mentioned. “I’m not going to lie. Before the game, some people even told me it didn’t feel like a game day. The bye week throws you off a little bit.”

For the Steelers, the lag from the bye threw them off to the tune of a 10-point deficit late within the first half and a 14-point gap early within the second.

A workforce that entered the second half of its schedule with a snug lead within the division and high seed within the AFC was shedding — and searching unhealthy in doing it — in opposition to the last-place, three-win Indianapolis Colts.

Maybe the considered dropping one other street recreation to an inferior opponent impressed the Steelers. Maybe they only settled down and determined to play like a Super Bowl contender.

Whatever the rationale, the Steelers prevented an embarrbading loss of their return from per week off, scoring 17 unanswered factors within the second half to tug out a 20-17 victory over the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.

When Chris Boswell’s 33-yard area aim sailed by means of the uprights at time expired, the Steelers had gained their fourth in a row to enhance to 7-2.

And, identical to that, no person was fretting about missed tackles, damaged coverages, dropped pbades or particular groups gaffes that plagued the Steelers all through a recreation that included the lack of beginning cornerback Joe Haden to a fibula fracture.

“There’s a lot of negativity to talk about, but we’ll talk about that negativity with a win,” coach Mike Tomlin mentioned. “That’s my preference. Good lessons learned. Guys delivered in the critical moments, and that’s exciting.”

Ben Roethlisberger threw second-half landing pbades to JuJu Smith-Schuster and Vance McDonald, plus a tying 2-point conversion cross to Martavis Bryant.

Boswell’s profitable kick got here one collection after his 37-yard try clanked off the best upright and adopted a 19-yard, third-down catch by Bryant and a 32-yard reception by Antonio Brown that put the Steelers in area aim place.

“Guys didn’t blink,” Tomlin mentioned. “You have to give them credit for that.”

Until the comeback, the Steelers regarded like they might lose their post-bye recreation for the fourth 12 months in a row. They have been shut out till Boswell kicked a area aim with 30 seconds left within the half, reducing right into a 10-Zero deficit.

Also within the first half:

• The Steelers punted thrice on one drive, with the primary two makes an attempt being negated by holding penalties.

• Roethlisberger threw an interception on the second play of the sport, a deep cross supposed for Bryant, and fumbled a snap out of the shotgun late within the half.

• Corner Artie Burns was overwhelmed badly on a 60-yard landing cross when Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett selected to go after him moderately than backup Coty Sensabaugh, who had simply changed an injured Haden.

“I was flat personally the first couple of series, the first half,” All-Pro guard David DeCastro mentioned. “Credit to the team for sticking through it and finding a way to win, making the plays necessary.”

The malaise did not finish at halftime. Brissett opened the second half with a 61-yard landing cross to Chester Rogers that featured missed tackles by nickel nook Mike Hilton and free security Mike Mitchell.

“I just thought we were ready for the situation,” defensive finish Cam Heyward mentioned. “Everybody locked in and said we’ve got to make some plays, get off the field, get the ball to our offense and see what we can do.”

The Colts had simply two first downs, one through a penalty, the remainder of the best way.

Roethlisberger, who had a 33.2 pbader ranking within the first half, threw a 7-yard landing cross to Smith-Schuster with 7 minutes, 47 seconds left within the third. Boswell’s extra-point try was blocked, however punter Jordan Berry and tight finish Jesse James tracked down Matthias Farley 2 yards earlier than he may full an unbelievable 2-point return.

The Steelers struck once more with 11:52 left, scoring three performs after Shazier intercepted Brissett on the Colts’ 10. On third down, McDonald obtained open in the best nook of the top zone and waved his arms till Roethlisberger noticed him for a 7-yard rating.

After taking a timeout, the Steelers misplaced 5 yards on a delay of recreation, pushing the 2-point try again to the 7. No matter. Roethlisberger discovered Bryant open throughout the again of the top zone to tie the rating at 17-17.

All that was left was for Boswell to atone for his earlier missed area aim for the Steelers to sneak residence with the ugliest of victories.

“You don’t want all of them to be like this,” DeCastro mentioned “Make it a bit cleaner, but it surely’s the NFL. That’s the best way it’s, and coming off a bye week, there’s one thing to be mentioned for that.

“Hopefully, we’ve got all of the rust off.”
