Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was sending a message to the team with his post-game comments following Sunday’s defeat to the Buccaneers in the NFC Championship. The message was likely several traps.
Here is one. According to a league source, the Rodgers want a new contract.
Rogers needed Want a new contract. He makes $ 33.5 million per year. He would go on to win the 2020 NFL MVP Award. And that is happening in the years following his final deal, which would pay him much less than other quarterbacks.
He is set to make $ 22.35 million in 2021, $ 25.5 million in 2022, and $ 25.5 million in 2023.
Rodgers is currently the chief of quarterback Patrick Mahomes ($ 45 million), Texas quarterback Deshawn Watson ($ 39 million), Seahawk quarterback Russell Wilson ($ 35 million), and Steelers quarterback Ben Rothlisberger ($ 34 million) after average new-money. Ranked fifth in price.
Rodgers earn the same amount as quarterback Jerd Goff. Which means Rodgers is grossly underpaid, Gough is grossly overpaid, or both. (Both)
Rodgers’ capacity is over $ 37 million for $ 2021, but a new contract could easily reduce it. A new deal also reflects the team’s commitment to the Rodgers over the next few years, based on guaranteed payments and cap results arising from cutting or trading it.
If Rodger officially asks for a new contract, he will surely get one thing: clarity where he stands. A new deal means a renewed pledge. Nothing new means that the clock will still stick to a potential, if not inevitable, divorce.
While Rodgers may want more (especially as it relates to efforts to improve the team), the one thing he wants – and deserves – is a new contract.
